A dashboard range estimate can be useful, but it is not a complete answer to how EV battery health is checked. What EV battery health actually means

Battery health is usually expressed as State of Health, often shortened to SoH. It compares the battery’s present usable capacity and performance with its condition when new. A battery with a higher SoH retains more of its original energy capacity and should, all else being equal, support more driving range.

SoH is not a simple pass-or-fail score. A modest reduction in capacity can be normal as an EV ages, just as any rechargeable battery changes gradually through use. The key question is whether the battery is ageing predictably and performing as intended for the vehicle’s mileage, age and operating conditions.

A technician may also consider State of Charge, or SoC. This is the current amount of energy stored in the battery, similar to a fuel gauge. SoC tells you how full the battery is at that moment; SoH indicates its longer-term condition. The two are related but should never be confused.

Reviewing temperature and cooling performance

Heat management has a direct effect on battery life, charging speed and performance. EVs use thermal management systems to keep the battery within an efficient operating range. During an inspection, technicians can review battery temperature readings and check for fault codes connected to cooling, heating or sensors.

When should an EV battery be checked?

A battery assessment is also valuable when purchasing a used EV. Mileage alone does not tell the whole story. Two vehicles of the same age can have different battery conditions depending on charging habits, climate exposure, maintenance history and how they have been used. What owners can do between inspections

Good battery care is generally straightforward. Use charging practices recommended in the owner’s handbook, avoid leaving the vehicle at an extreme charge level for extended periods where possible, and keep up with scheduled servicing and software updates.
